Jesse Vista graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelors of Science in Computer Information Systems in 2004. Since 1998, Jesse has had the interest and desire to learn about the internet and web design. Starting out was not easy because he had no direction on how to learn this interesting and prosperous idea of the web. Thankfully the internet was a portal for anything Jesse needed to learn.

Although web design was now a much simpler task there came a thurst for something new. Dynamic content! Javascript soon became a new and exciting idea. But there was a problem, Jesse had never programmed before. After countless nights of research on how this technology worked with web design, something finally clicked. Javascript was now part of his ever expanding knowlege for web design and now web development.

Jesse was not fullfilled with knowing just HTML and Javascript, so he turned to the university for guidence. Information technology was exactly what he was looking for. So he packed his bags and drove eight hours to his new adventure at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.

After three years of tests, exams, and lecturing, Jesse finally received his degree in Computer Information Systems.

Through dedication and self learning, Jesse has become a well rounded web designer, web developer, and web administrator.

Education and Training

University: Grand Valley State University
Degree: Bachelor of Science
Emphasis: Computer Information Systems
Year: 2004
I earned a Bachelors of Science degree at Grand Valley State University in 2004 with a major in Computer Information Systems. My experience at GVSU far surpassed the piece of paper I received from the university at the end of my senior year.

Where do I begin! GVSU emphasizes an all around education, and therefore it felt like I was taking a lot of nonsense courses that will not be helping me for my future. My biggest concern was all the extra time it was going to take to finish all the required classes. I soon learned that to be an all around person I would need to get an all around education.

I had taken two English classes which I found very enlightening and helped form my writing and interpersonal skills. English courses were never my strengths but I have learned I need to work on subjects lacking in discipline. Through dedication and time spent, I came out of my English course challenge a much better writer and analyzer of other written materials.

There were many computer courses that were required of me to take just for my major alone. Database was my first 300 level course and I should not have been taking it at that time. There was a flaw in GVSU's system that would allow people to sign up for 300 level classes even though they did not have enough credits. I feelt the effect of not taking the courses in order because I lacked the anylitical skills required. At the same time I was taking Discrete Structures in math, which should have been taken before the Database course because it would have given me the foundation I needed to understand the method by which one needs to create databases systematically and correctly.

We used Oracle on Linux machines to create the databases and tables needed for our course project. My group and I had came up with a comic book super hero database. We had meetings about how the tables should be created and how they would relate to each other. Coming up with a list of super heros and their relationship with other super heros was somewhat of a challenge for me because I dont follow commics at all, but it was interesting anyway. When we decided to go with our plan we created the database through the Oracle command line terminal. We then needed to run specific querries given to us by our professor. I, along with the group, had to present our findings and explain the project in front of our peers.

Networking was a class that just didnt seem to fit in with the CIS cariculum. None of the other classes had anything to do with networking. My professor was a very knowledgeble guy and I had learned a lot from the course. One thing that sticks out was the end of the semester project I had to do. This was an individual effort to network a new wing off the Macinac Hall at GVSU. Let me say, for the first time learning anything about networking, this was a huge challege. I had to bid on the project, meaning I had to find out how much every little thing would cost, down to the last screw. I was given the floor plan of the wing and was told layout the whole thing. I used Microsoft Viso to graphically show how the wiring, wireless access points, server room, and wire closet would be in the building. I even drew out the rack for the servers. Along with that a narative of the proposed LAN. I even had to create a mock company name and create a profile.
